A visitation will be held on Monday for a former Floyd County deputy killed in Afghanistan. Barry Sutton worked as a contractor training police officers in Kabul and died in a suicide bombing.

Floyd County Sheriff Tim Burkhalter can't say enough good things about Sutton. The Sheriff calls the retired Marine, a friend.

"He was a fantastic example. The kind of person you want in your department. We hunted across the mountains here, spent a lot of time here, and watched our kids grow up. I brought my kids duck hunting and so did Tim, and so did Barry," said Floyd Co Sheriff Tim Burkhalter.

The 46-year-old father also worked for the Floyd County police department for 13 years. Major Tom Ewing said Sutton was like a brother to him and always put family first.

"The number one thing he cared about was his family and girls. He took care of them and did everything with them first. They always came first in his life. They knew they were loved and I knew they were loved," said Major Ewing.

Friends said Sutton was serving his 4th tour as a contractor in Afghanistan. He had talked about the risks, but decided to go back one last time to wrap up some financial obligations.

"That conversation still haunts me. He said I am going back one more time to pay off the house and I said Barry we got a job when you come back," the Sheriff remembered.

Sutton leaves behind, a mother and three young adult daughters.

The visitation is taking place Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Church at Northside on North Floyd Park Road in Rome. Funeral services are Tuesday at the church at 4:00 p.m.
