White House protestor Concepcion Picciotto dies

-
The woman who protested outside the White House by holding a peace vigil for more than 30 years has died. Concepcion Picciotto maintained a peace vigil in Lafayette Park along Pennsylvania Avenue, right in front of the White House, since 1981.

The Washington Post first reported Picciotto’s death Monday evening. She was 80 years old.

Picciotto reportedly died at the N Street Village, a shelter for homeless women, The Post reported.

The vigil, which was seen over the years by hundreds of thousands of White House visitors, included a tent and many protest signs. Park Police seized her signs in September 2013, and D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton intervened.

According to the Post, Picciotto had suffered a recent fall, but the immediate cause of her death wasn’t known.
