Police say the child was playing too close to the pond Friday evening in the 1500 block of Southview Drive.
On Saturday police identified the victim as 7-year-old Zae' Quan Antonio White of Southeast Washington, DC.
Police say the child walked onto the ice-covered pond and fell through into the water. His sister got their mother who then flagged down a police car that just happen to be passing by.
"They successfully pulled the child out of the pond, performed CPR and waited for fire rescue to arrive," said Lt. Harry Bond of the Prince George's County Police Department.
It is not known if the brother and sister were from the area. The pond is part of a community which has houses around it. It was a dramatic rescue played out on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
"With this job, you really never know what is going to happen day to day," said Bond.
Police say the boy was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. All of the officers were also taken to the hospital and treated due to the freezing temperatures. The three officers who assisted in pulling the victim from the water are Police Officer Dale Sollars, Police Officer First Class Brendan Taylor and Police Officer Melvin Fulton.
