WASHINGTON - A grassroots advocacy group delivered a petition with more than 1600 signatures to Redskins Park Monday demanding that owner Dan Snyder change the team's nickname.
The 'Rebrand Washington Football Group' presented the petition to team officials at 10 a.m.
In a press release, the group says it was founded earlier this year by local football fans to advocate that the Redskins adopt a new nickname because they believe it offends Native Americans.
In a letter to Snyder, the group says, "We understand you want to honor Native Americans. The best way to do this is to change the name of your football team."
Many groups and individuals have called for the team to change its name in recent months.
The team received a negative response online after a tweet with the team’s logo wished followers a happy Thanksgiving.
