DDOT: Mile markers to be placed on Metropolitan Branch Trail 'within one month'

After several muggings on the Metropolitan Branch Trail, D.C. officials promised new mile markers would be placed along the trail.

Over 1,200 people use this trail each day and many are upset with the crime that happens here. The problem is if you are a victim of a crime or you need emergency care, it is hard to pinpoint where you are.

Earlier this month, FOX 5 was given video taken by a bicyclist showing two suspects involved in a robbery of another bike rider on the trail. At a community meeting almost two weeks ago, city officials said they would get the markers in place.

On Tuesday, we checked several places along the trail and did not see the markers.

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association said it is frustrated the markers are not in place. We asked them if it should be taking this long.

“No, but I understand how the government works,” said Nelle Pierson of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. “We are putting the pressure on. We were happy to involved in the conversation. We’re happy to be pushing for these changes.”

We contacted D.C. police who told us that this was out of their hands and the District Department of Transportation were the people in charge of placing the markers on the trail.

DDOT sent FOX 5 a statement Tuesday afternoon saying:

“DDOT is committed to the safety of the Metropolitan Branch Trail and is moving diligently to design, fabricate, and install the mile markers for the MBT. DDOT is fabricating and installing long-lasting, weather-resistant, solid metal plate mile markers, which will be placed on street light poles that are already on the trail. We anticipate completing the design, fabrication and installation of the markers within one month.”
