Vigil to mark 1 year since explosion killed 7 at Silver Spring apartment complex

- A vigil has been scheduled to mark one year since a devastating fire and explosion at a Montgomery County apartment complex killed seven people, including two children.

The deadly incident happened at the Flower Branch Apartments in Silver Spring.

Dozens of residents were able to escape the blaze and many were injured. The bodies of those who died were recovered during searches that lasted several days.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still continuing. Authorities have said a natural gas buildup is a probable cause.

Thursday’s vigil is being organized by the Flower Branch Tenants Association and Court Appointed Special Advocate.

Following the explosion, lawsuits were filed by residents against the apartment management company and the utility company.

Tonight's vigil will be at 8 p.m. in the parking lot across the street from the apartments at 8644 Piney Branch Road.
