Lexus developing 'Back to the Future'-like hoverboard

It's something you have seen Marty McFly ride in the movie "Back to the Future Part II." But is an actual hoverboard on the way for consumers?

Lexus says they have developed a ride-able skateboard-style hoverboard that uses liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets to achieve magnetic levitation and frictionless movement.

The automaker released a teaser video showing off the Lexus Hoverboard on Wednesday.

The design of their prototype "features the iconic Lexus spindle grille signature shape and uses materials found in the luxury car brand, from the high tech to natural bamboo."

"At Lexus, we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible," said Mark Templin, executive vice president at Lexus International. "That determination, combined with our passion and expertise for design and innovation, is what led us to take on the Hoverboard project. It's the perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved when you combine technology, design and imagination."

Testing of the hoverboard will be taking place in Barcelona, Spain during the summer.

However, if you're wondering where you can get one of your own, Lexus says their device is only a prototype and will not go on sale.
