The Metropolitan Police Department says 16-year-old Malik Mercer of Clinton, Maryland, died Saturday. Police say Mercer was wounded in a shooting Tuesday in the 2800 block of 28th Street SE.
The teenager was followed off a Metro bus and shot in the neck for reasons still unclear.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier held a special news conference on Wednesday asking for help in the case.
On Friday, police arrested 22-year-old Derryck Antjuan Decuir of Southeast D.C. He has been charged with assault with intent to kill while armed. Police said the arrest came after they received tips from the community.
Sharon Becks said her heart is broken. Her son was in life support and she wanted to wait until his birthday next Tuesday before doing the unthinkable and letting him go.
Becks and two of her other children came to the bus stop on Friday where her son, Malek, was shot. All three of them stood together examining the broken glass where Malek last stood.
Becks said her son was on the way to his best friend's house when he was followed off the bus and shot.
A story being told by a witness and not corroborated by D.C. police says Malek may have been shot for his belt.
"He wears nice belts like Michael Kors, he has a Gucci belt, he has a Superman belt," his mother said. "Just those name brand types of belts. That is how he likes to dress. He likes to dress nicely."
By Wednesday, police released video of three suspects on a bus and Lanier held a special news conference to bring attention to the footage.
"Everybody should be outraged and everybody should be trying to get justice for this family," Lanier said on Wednesday.
Malek's mother did not recognize any of the men on the bus surveillance video. But when she sees the video, she said, "It just hurt to see them follow my son off the bus and know what they followed them off the bus to do -- their intentions -- so it just hurts."
Becks said Malek was a fun-loving high school sophomore who was about to leave Ballou High School and enroll in school near her new home in Clinton, Maryland.
"He is a lovable child," she said. "Everybody loves him. Everybody likes to be around him and when everybody knows what happened to him, they are hurt. Nobody knows how to respond."
