DC police chief adds new Criminal Interdiction Unit

FOX 5's Paul Wagner has learned D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has formed a new crime fighting unit comprised of approximately 40 officers who will work the streets as the Criminal Interdiction Unit (CIU).

According to a document obtained by FOX 5, the officers in the CIU will dress in non-traditional black polo shirts, tan pants and tan boots, and will be "targeting crime patterns as they emerge." The document says the unit is now in training, and is staffed by officers who "have experience in virtually all areas of criminal investigations."

The elite unit will be deployed in different parts of the city "targeting organized patterns of crime, repeat offenders and other assignments as necessary." Members had to go through a "rigorous application process and interview."
