Man runs into DC charter school for help after being shot outside in car

- Police said a man was shot Monday morning while waiting in a car outside of a charter school in Northeast D.C.

According to police, at around 8:30 a.m., the man dropped off his girlfriend and child off at Harmony DC Public Charter School located on T Street. As he was waiting for his girlfriend to return to the car, a gold-colored Lexus vehicle approached and the driver of that vehicle fired several shots at him. The victim was hit in the arm and grazed in the stomach.

The victim then ran into the school and waited for police and emergency personnel to arrive. Police said the victim was conscious and breathing when he was transported to the hospital for treatment.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Interim D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham visited the charter school Monday afternoon to reassure residents that the students were safe when the shooting happened.

“This appears to be two people known to each other, that the children were out of harm’s way already in school and that the police issued a warrant for the arrest of the person responsible,” said Bowser. “We are looking to pick him up off the street as soon as we can.”

Police said some teachers heard the shooting outside, but no one inside the school was injured. The school remained open after the incident.
