21-year-old charged in murder of elderly man inside Capitol Hill rowhouse

WASHINGTON - Police have arrested a 21-year-old man they say stabbed and killed an elderly resident inside of his Capitol Hill rowhouse.

Investigators say Malcolm Amir Cunningham was arrested Monday by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. He is charged with second-degree murder while armed.

Police say 79-year-old David Norwood died Sunday afternoon after being found with multiple stab wounds inside a home in the 600 block of C Street in Northeast D.C.

According to a family member, Norwood was Cunningham's step-grandfather who was married to his grandmother and they all lived in the home.

FOX 5 spoke with Cunningham's brother and he confirmed what court records describe - a living situation that was quickly deteriorating.

According to the court documents, Cunningham was involved in several altercations with family members inside the home. In one incident, he said he was going to kill a family member who was staring at him. This happened when his grandmother left the house to go to a doctor's appointment and reportedly took place less than a month before the murder. On another occasion, he pulled a knife on a family member and said he would kill everyone inside the home. That is when Cunningham was told he had three weeks to move out.

Police say the 21-year-old used a black and silver knife to kill Norwood. The knife was later discovered nearby after a witness reported a tip to police seeing a suspicious person dumping the weapon into a recycling bin.
