Mother's boyfriend charged after 2-year-old girl dies after being forgotten inside car

A 2-year-old girl died Wednesday after investigators said she was accidentally forgotten and left inside of a car in Fairfax County. Police have charged the boyfriend of the child's mother in this case.

Police said 32-year-old Daiquan Fields was supposed to drop off three children at two different locations Wednesday morning. Authorities said he dropped off two of the older children, a 10-year-old and 15-year-old, and then returned to his Fairfax County home forgetting that the 2-year-old remained in the back seat of the vehicle. The child is believed to have been left in the car for about seven hours between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Police said Fields realized the child was still in the car when he went to pick up the girl's mother later in the afternoon. When he arrived at the mother's workplace in Pentagon City, Fields looked in the back seat and found the child unresponsive. He immediately called 911 and the 2-year-old was taken to Virginia Hospital Center where she was pronounced dead.

Police have charged Fields with felony child neglect and involuntary manslaughter. The medical examiner has yet to determine the cause of death.
