2 cracked rails cause delays on DC's Metro system

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Metro is warning commuters about delays because of two cracked rails.

Metro says trains on its silver and orange lines were running on a single track Friday morning. At one point earlier in the morning, the agency said there was no train service between the West Falls Church and Ballston stations in Arlington, Virginia, before service was restored to one track.

Consecutive days of extremely low temperatures can cause major problems for rail systems.

On Jan. 8, below-freezing temperatures wreaked havoc on the morning commute in Washington, at one point causing delays on five of Metro's six lines as temperatures dipped to 12 degrees. The delays were caused by broken and cracked rails, and weather-related equipment problems.

Friday's high in Washington is expected to reach around 15 degrees.
