Officer saves unconscious man from burning Md. home

The heroic actions of an officer helped save a man trapped in a burning home in Waldorf, Charles County Sheriff Troy D. Berry said.

Neighbors called 911 after seeing flames coming from the roof of a home on Greenwood Court early Monday morning. Two people escaped, a 26-year-old woman and a 3-year-old girl, but a man was still inside.

Officer V. Warker, the first to arrive on the scene, forced his way into the home without protective gear. The home was filled with heavy smoke and the rear of the home was on fire.

Authorities said Warker, who could only see inches in front of him, noticed a pair of white socks as he crawled on the floor. The socks were on a man who was lying on the floor unconscious.

Warker dragged the man out of the home, where several others were waiting to assist the victim. Fire and EMS personnel arrived on the scene and provided oxygen and conducted first aid.

The 44-year-old victim suffered from smoke inhalation and burns to his head and throat, authorities said. He was flown to the hospital.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
