New surveillance video released of suspect in 7-Eleven clerk's murder

- Prince George’s County detectives released surveillance footage and photos of a man they believe to be wanted in connection to the shooting death of a convenience store clerk, and a hotel robbery that happened shortly afterwards.

Police say around 4:50 a.m. on Saturday, officers were called to the 7-Eleven store located in the 9700 block of Brandywine Road in Clinton because of a reported shooting. It is believed the suspect tried to rob the store, and during that attempted robbery, the clerk-- 31-year-old Taiwo Oduwole of Upper Marlboro – was shot.

Captain Brian Riley said the suspect was armed with a handgun when he walked behind the counter, confronted Oduwole-- who was working the midnight shift-- and began assaulting him. When Oduwole jumped the counter and ran away toward the front door, the suspect shot him once in the back.

But it didn't end there. Oduwole kept running out the door into the parking lot, Riley said. That's where the suspect followed, shooting Oduwole again in the back-- at which point the victim collapsed in the parking lot. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The suspect got away and hit the hotel a short time later-- but no money was taken from the 7-Eleven.

"This is an absolutely senseless crime that should never have taken place," Riley told reporters, adding that Oduwole had only been in the U.S. from Nigeria for about five months.

Investigators believe the same suspect robbed a Comfort Inn hotel in the 7900 block of Malcolm Road in Clinton soon after the shooting at the 7-Eleven. Surveillance video was released Monday, showing the suspect inside the hotel.

Police are hoping someone will recognize the distinctive black, red and silver jacket the suspect was wearing. He was also wearing a backpack, which connected to the jacket. The suspect is seen wearing the same jacket and backpack in surveillance video from both the convenience store and the hotel. It's difficult, however, to make out the suspect's features because of what he was wearing. Anyone who knows someone who has this jacket and backpack or has seen someone wearing it recently is asked to call police.

Captain Riley also said police believe there is a second person who was involved these crimes, who acted as a getaway driver.

The reward in the case was increased on Monday from $25,000 to $50,000, with the additional amount being offered by the FBI.

Family members told FOX 5 that Oduwole had only moved to the U.S. from Africa a few months ago. He was living with friends in Upper Marlboro. Despite being in the area such a short time, it was clear Oduwole made an impact on his customers.

“I’m just thankful that I knew who he was, and that God has given me the gift that he would come across my path,” said Phyllis Boone, a customer who knew Oduwole from the store. “Because he was such a genuine, kind person.”

Boone said she was devastated Oduwole was so senselessly killed. She described how he would tell kids who came into the store and would take items that he would pay for them himself before letting them walk out of the store. Another customer told FOX 5 Oduwole had been working on his master's degree, and was earning money at the 7-Eleven to help pay for his education.

“He was very intelligent,” said Kashanique Dunkley, another customer. “He was working on his master’s degree. He said that he was just working here to help him pay for his education. I’m lost for words. I can’t believe this happened to him.”
