Victim of Metro assault speaks to FOX 5

A 69-year-old man who was the victim of an assault at a Metro station is sharing his story.

Last month, surveillance video showed Albert Langeberg being assaulted while walking up an escalator at the Eastern Market station.

The suspect, Elijah Smith, was arrested Monday and charged with felony assault.

"It's a sad situation where such a young man is destroying his life like this," Langeberg said.

The victim told FOX 5 the April 24 incident started on the train. As Langeberg was waiting by the door to exit, he said the suspect shoved him and said, "Get out of the way, old man!" The victim said he called the suspect a "disgrace to the human race." Langeberg said the suspect asked him, "Do you want to take it outside?"

On the escalator, the suspect spit at the victim and punched him. Langeberg said he was knocked out. The victim suffered injuries to his face, but he is feeling better. He said he will continue to ride the train.

"I'm not going to change my lifestyle any. I'm not afraid to ride Metro," Langeberg said.
