TIMELINE: Search for escaped prisoner ends in capture

An inmate hospitalized for treatment after a suicide attempt overpowered a guard, took her gun, escaped and carjacked two vehicles Tuesday, setting off a massive search that ended with his capture in the District. Here is a timeline of the key events, according to authorities:

March 20, 2015:

Wossen Assaye was taken into custody for a series of bank robberies. Dubbed the "Bicycle Bandit" -- he is accused of robbing a dozen banks in Northern Virginia and fleeing on his bicycle.

March 27, 2015:

The suspect attempted suicide at the Alexandria City Jail by tying a bed sheet around his neck.  He was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with a broken nose.

Tuesday, 3.a.m.:

Assaye overpowered a female security officer, took her gun and confronted a male officer.  After a shot was fired, the prisoner escaped with the gun and took off into a neighborhood wearing a hospital gown.

Early Tuesday morning:

Assaye broke into the trunk of a car. When the driver of that car got in the car to go to work, the suspect kicked out the back seat and carjacked the victim, police said. The car crashed, the driver got out, and Assaye took off with the car. Assaye eventually abandoned that car and went into the woods, evading police.

Mid-morning Tuesday:

Assaye carjacked a second car from the Annandale area. It was later abandoned.

Late Tuesday morning:

Someone on a bus identified a man who looked like Assaye in the District. Cops tracked him down at Minnesota and Pennsylvania Avenues in Southeast. Assaye was finally captured.

Tuesday, 3:30 p.m.:

Assaye made his initial appearance in federal court in Alexandria. He was charged with escaping from the custody of the U.S. Attorney General. Assaye waived his detention hearing and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m.
