2 dead after car drives into Potomac River

- Two people died Saturday after their vehicle plunged into the Potomac River off of Rock Creek Parkway.

DC Fire and EMS tweeted about the incident at around 11:05 p.m. saying that one of the car's occupants had managed to escape and told them that as many as two others were trapped inside the car.

Divers entered the water about 20 minutes later, assisted by boats, to search for the trapped passengers. Meantime, the person who had escaped the sinking vehicle was transported to the hospital.

First responders continued to search for the car until just after 1 a.m., when it was located and a recovery operation was launched. Both victims were located and pronounced dead on the scene, and crews left the area about an hour later.
