Cardio party alert: Flywheel opening first DC studio in Dupont Circle

The indoor cycling scene in the District is growing yet again, and this time, there's plenty of room to bring all your spin-loving friends on a sweat date. Flywheel Sports officially rides into D.C. next week for a workout they promise you'll never coast through—in the company's largest studio to date.

Dupont Circle will be home to Flywheel's 33rd location, with others in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Philadelphia, and beyond (even Dubai!). Flywheel takes over the two-story space that used to be occupied by Visions Cinema (1927 Florida Ave. NW), so it will take on a rather unique look for a spin studio. They're actually hanging on to a few elements of the old theater, including a "Now Playing" plaque outside.

Competitive? No sweat (well actually, there will be plenty).  While indoor cycling studios certainly aren't new to the District, Flywheel brings something else to the table: competition-- with yourself, or a little friendly competition with your neighbor. The theater-style studio holds 60-plus (yes, 6-0) high-tech bikes that track your "power" number (a combination of your resistance and speed).

If you opt in, your number and name of your choosing (get creative) are displayed on the "TorqBoard" at the front of the room, and you can watch the numbers during class. They're also available online (along with other performance metrics like speed, distance and even estimated calories burned) to help motivate you to work toward your goals in class.

But that's not all.  The new space will also be home to FlyBarre, Flywheel's version of barre classes. The goal: long, lean muscles. It's a total body sculpting class, which they call the perfect complement to the cycling classes. You'll work different muscle groups with small, intense interval exercises choreographed to music. Think light weights, a little dance, and a lot of core strengthening.

And if sweating to great tunes is your thing, there's better news. Whether you hop on a bike or hit the barre, Flywheel instructors across the country are known for their energetic playlists and theme classes—which just puts even more fun in your cardio party.

Flywheel opened its first studio in New York City in 2010.  The Dupont studio officially opens Tuesday, March 31 with classes offered in the morning, afternoon and evening. Classes are $28 individually (find package and membership details on their website).
