'New Columbia' may be new name for District if DC wins statehood bid

- A statehood commission decided Monday that if Washington, D.C. wins its bid to become the 51st state the name "New Columbia" may be what it calls itself.

Lawmakers, like Mayor Muriel Bowser, decided on the possible name and preliminary details regarding the legislature, according to the Washington Post.

"New Columbia" is a name voters approved of during statehood talks back in 1982.

The recent renewed push for statehood has received backing from President Obama and presidential nominee Clinton.

Voters will get an opportunity to vote on a different  in November.
