Victim of attempted robbery, shooting in Silver Spring dies

Montgomery County police say a man who was shot in an attempted robbery on Monday night has died, and the case is now being investigated as a homicide.

According to investigators, a gunman approached the man near Piney Branch Road and Dale Drive around 8:25 p.m. Monday. Police say the suspect pulled a gun and fired at the victim, hitting him at least once.

The victim ran, but investigators say he later collapsed in the road. He was listed in critical condition at the hospital on Monday night, but passed away early Tuesday morning. He has been identified as 24-year-old Jonathan Lopez of Brentwood, Md.

The suspect remains on the loose. He is being described as a light-skinned man who was wearing dark clothing at the time. No other details about his description were available.
