Wintry mix: 5 things to know for Tuesday afternoon

Spring is coming, folks, but it's not here yet. Here's proof: more wintry weather is in the works, and this time, it's your trip home that could be impacted. Freezing rain is possible, but it's what comes Thursday that could really get your attention.

Here are five things you need to know for Tuesday afternoon's freezing rain... and the chance of something more later this week:

1. THINGS GET STARTED BETWEEN 12-3 PM.
As of about 12:30 p.m., freezing rain had begun in many spots. A winter weather advisory went effect at 12 p.m. for both D.C. and Baltimore, as that potential for light icing approaches.

2. MINOR ACCUMULATIONS, BUT IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH…
This isn't expected to be as bad as Sunday's ice storm, but remember, it doesn't take much to cause major issues, especially on the roads (see also: #3).  Most spots can expect minor accumulations of less than .10".

Eventually, warmer air will take over, and for the late evening, we'll just be dealing with rain.

3. YOUR EVENING COMMUTE MIGHT NOT BE FUN.
Like #2 says, it doesn't take much wintry anything to make for a major traffic mess. Beware that your evening commute may be impacted. Some school systems have cancelled school-sponsored afternoon and evening activities already, and we'll keep you posted on any closings that may happen throughout the day (click here for those updates).

4. DON'T FORGET YOUR UMBRELLA TOMORROW.
It'll be a rainy Wednesday (but that's better than ice….). If you can believe this part: your temps? They'll get into the LOWER 50s (not a typo). But don't get too excited, because…. #5.

5. SNOWY THURSDAY?
Sorry, but this isn't a typo either: another front is moving our way Wednesday night into Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch that will be in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday evening. The timing may be tricky, but all indications are that we'll have a period of heavy snow starting in the early morning hours of Thursday and could last into the afternoon.

Because that should be fun.

According to the FOX 5 Weather Team, early indications show that our area could see from 4 to 10+ inches with areas north and west receiving the higher totals.

PS. ONLY 17 DAYS UNTIL SPRING. We're coming for you, March 20.
