Overturned SUV kills pedestrian in NW DC; 2 others injured

A man has died and two others are injured after a car crash in the Chinatown area of Washington D.C. Police say an SUV overturned and trapped a man underneath.

The accident occurred on the sidewalk at H and 4th Street in Northwest D.C.

The vehicle flipped on top of the pedestrian and crushing him while injuring another person in its path.

"The security officers at the building here were very cooperative with us," said D.C. Police Lt. Ron Wilkins. "One of the security officers was the first on the scene and rendered aid to the pedestrian. They have been helping us now with a lot of the camera footage so we can piece together this whole accident."

Police say the driver was heading down H Street towards 5th Street at a high rate of speed when the SUV rolled across the street and stopped outside of the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

Police say the vehicle ran through a traffic light pole, which hit the building. The vehicle then struck a wall and started rotating.

Police shut down roads around the accident, which led to a rush hour traffic nightmare.

Some workers inside the federal building said they had no idea what was happening just feet from their office.

The driver and another pedestrian are still in the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police plan on questioning that driver who could face charges.
