Suspect CAUGHT after manhunt following shooting of deputy sheriff

- A man accused of shooting a sheriff's deputy while he responded to an emergency call in Stafford County was arrested following an extensive overnight manhunt.

Officers say 18-year-old Joshua Sumter was placed into custody around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday. They say Sumter fired several shots at a Stafford Sheriff's deputy Tuesday night as he responded to a breaking and entering call on Windsor Ridge Court in Fredericksburg.

It is unclear if the officer fired back at the suspect.

Sumter is charged with attempted capital murder, aggravated malicious wounding and four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

While being taken to jail, Sumter attempted to escape and assaulted a deputy, but he was quickly taken back into custody, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office. He has also been charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and escape with force. Sumter is being held without bond.

Authorities say the deputy’s injuries are 'extensive' but non-life-threatening. He underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon and is fully expected to recover.
