A former Marine was killed in a fire that sparked inside northern Virginia apartment Tuesday morning.
Fire crews were called to the home on Mosby Woods Drive in Fairfax around 2:45 a.m. Officials said 74-year-old William Patton, II was found in a second-floor bedroom, and emergency crews' attempts to perform CPR on Mr. Patton failed.
Investigators believe the fire started in Patton's bedroom, and it was caused by smoking materials. The blaze was contained to Patton's unit, but as many as 19 adults and two children who live in the building were displaced as a result.
Fire crews were headed back to the building on Tuesday night to check smoke detectors.
