Metro places speed restrictions on sections of track due to cold temperatures

Cold temperatures have caused D.C. Metro to place speed restrictions on portions of some tracks.

Traveling at slower temperatures provides additional protection against cracked rails which can occur when cold rails contract, Metro said in a press release.

Metro says the speed restriction zones are as short as a few hundred feet and, depending on the location, still allow trains to operate at speeds up to 40 mph.
