If there's going to be a weekly weather challenge (really?), this is (maybe probably we hope) it. You see, the smart people on the FOX 5 Weather team (read: Sue Palka) tell there COULD be rain OR s-s-s…. oh we'll just say it—SNOW on the horizon for the middle of the week.
So far, 2015 has brought us some winter weather forecasts that weren't so easy to predict, and this is no exception. We're still watching it close, so here's what you need to know for now:
1. IT'S A CLIPPER—BUT NOT AS COLD AS THE LAST ONE.
Remember a couple weeks ago when 1-2" turned into 2-4" in some places? We thought so. Well, that was a clipper (you might know her as Alberta), and so is this next system.
The good news? It won't be nearly as cold as the last one (when we told you to get out 147 layers and put them all on at once? Don't remind us). By the way, who invited Alberta to this party, anyway?
2. BIG QUESTION=TIMING.
Ah yes. By now, this might sound familiar. Timing is everything. Will it be rain, or will it be snow? In this case, Sue says if the snow falls when it's colder, less will melt. If it falls when it's warmer, we'll see less accumulation.
Make sense? We thought so. Now if we could only work out the when…. (see #5).
3. IT MIGHT BE TWO WAVES.
Why have one when you can have TWO? Our friend Alberta the clipper may deliver said rain/snow in two doses, Sue says. Again, it's a bit too soon to tell, but for now (as of Monday evening) it looks like one round could come late morning to early afternoon, and a second evening piece. You know, just in time for your commute home.
Thank Mother Nature later... because unless your goal is snow angels, we're good with just one.
4. WHEN IT FALLS DETERMINES HOW MUCH MELTS.
This is kind of like #2, because it's all about the timing. But it's #4, so it's different. You see, Sue tells us more of what falls will MELT (instead of sticking piling up and making your commute a big ol' pain) if it falls LATER in the day vs. in the morning when temperatures are colder. If it falls earlier, more snow might stick. Now, read that three times fast and report back.
Translation: If you like snow angels/snow days/cancellations of everything, you're on #TeamEarly.
5. IF YOU LIKE SNOW...KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE WEEKEND.
Models are starting to come into agreement on the potential for a coastal storm system during the first part of the weekend. FOX 5's Tucker Barnes and Mike Thomas say it is still far too early to get a handle on the exact track and where the exact location of the rain/snow line will be, but the potential is at least there that we could possibly see our most significant snow of the winter season so far.
