EXCLUSIVE: Parents of American University graduate who was killed on Metro train speak out to FOX 5

FOX 5's Bob Barnard reports.

- A generous plea offer was made Friday to the  19-year-old District man who faces charges in the stabbing death of an American University alumnus while onboard a Metro train last summer.

The offer of a 30-year sentence was made to Jasper Spires in exchange for a guilty plea in the shocking murder of 24-year-old Kevin Sutherland. In July 2015, Sutherland was stabbed to death during an attempted robbery on a Red Line train as it was heading to the NoMa-Gallaudet University station.

Spires is also charged with robbing two others in the train, including a senior citizen. He also assaulted a fourth passenger, prosecutors say.

A trial date has not been set but a hearing is scheduled for September 9, at 11 a.m.cheduled for September 9, at 11 a.m.
