Flooded roadways, downed trees follow night of severe storms

- Monday’s heavy rains and storms have left flooded roadways in and around the D.C. area.

The storms moved through the region Monday evening around 8 p.m. when rain, and even hail, fell for several hours. Power outages have left street lights and intersections without power while downed trees have caused road hazards for commuters. On Longfellow Street, in the northeast, road crews spent much of the night clearing the roadway after felled trees crushed several parked vehicles.

In the District, high water made several lanes of Interstate 295 in the northeast impassable. Images from the scene showed standing water in the right lanes of the underpass just south of Eastern Avenue.

Emergency crews worked throughout the night in Montgomery County after the storms brought down trees and caused water levels to rise. Fire and rescue personnel performed several water rescued after vehicles were stranded on the roadway due to high water.
