Wedding party rescued by fire department after being stuck in elevator

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Weddings can be stressful. You want every detail to be perfect for the big day. But there was one big hiccup during the wedding day for a D.C. couple this weekend -- the entire wedding party got stuck in an elevator.

Liz Copeland and Harry Stein tied the knot at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria on Saturday. Everything was going great until right before the ceremony.

"We're getting in the elevator to go down to the ceremony and it's a big elevator because it used to be a torpedo factory," said Harry.

The wedding coordinator, photographer, parents, grandparents and the entire wedding party loaded onto the elevator excited for the ceremony to begin.

"We go down about two feet and we stop," Harry said. "There wasn't a crash or anything. We just stop and everyone just kind of looked at each other. I think someone said right when we were getting on, 'Gee, I hope we don't get stuck.'"

"I think that was my mom," said Liz.

They pushed every elevator button, but nothing worked. Then the photographer made the emergency call to the Alexandria Fire Department.

Surprisingly during the 15-minute wait in the elevator, no one panicked.

"Almost instantly, people took out their phones and started taking pictures," said Harry. "The photographers were fantastic. They start taking pictures of us taking pictures. They got a great picture of everybody in the elevator.".

The photographers documented the rescue as well. The firefighters even hung around for a few pictures.

So how was the bride during all this?

"I just couldn't let myself freak out," Liz said. "I was just like -- you know what? We're going to get out of here. Then we're going to get married and this is just part of the day. This is just part of the experience. So I was calm. My mother on the other hand was a little less calm.

"The moment we stepped out, we were like this is pretty funny. This is something we'll remember forever and it just kind of kicked off the night in a fun way. It took us a second to kind of regain composure, get ready, go do the ceremony, but I think we'll always remember that."

Liz and Harry had a positive spin on this and they had a really great sunset during the ceremony that they probably wouldn't have experienced if the wedding started on time.
