WASHINGTON - Tito Jackson, member of the legendary Jackson 5, stopped by GoodDayDC to reminisce about his time performing with his brothers and about the new music he is working on – including his new album, Tito Time.
It took Tito a long time to release his first solo record – over 40 years from the time the Jackson 5 first released their debut. The reason? He was raising his family. "I decided to wait, you know, and do what was important, and be there as a husband and a father," said Tito, who is the last of his siblings to release an album. "That is a very important job. That's good job."
Tito said that his famous friend and basketball star, Charles Barkley, once joked with him, saying he hadn’t released a solo project because he wasn’t good enough.
Years later - with his kids onboard for the album and the tour - Tito finally has his chance to prove him wrong.
JACKSON 5 BEGINNINGS
Tito got into music by playing his father's guitar. The problem? His father had told him not to touch his prized instrument. "When he went to work he said, 'While I'm at work, don't none of you boys touch my guitar.' Of course, to kids, that's like saying touch it," he said.
His father finally found out about his clandestine practice sessions - which were overlooked by his mother - when he broke a string. "He was really upset. He took me in the room, took care of my butt, and sat me down. He put it in my lap and said, 'Show me what you know.'"
His father was so impressed by Tito's playing style that he wound up giving him the guitar – telling him to learn every song he could.
Tito says certain Jackson 5 songs take him back to memories of the best times of being in a band with his brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael. His favorite song? I Want You Back - the song that put them on the map!
