WASHINGTON - A former singer of "The Wanted," Nathan Sykes has taken a few pages out of Justin Timberlake's playbook. Shedding his boy band image, he's currently touring with Alessia Cara and has an album dropping November 4, 2016 called "Unfinished Business."
Before hitting the stage in D.C. at The Fillmore (tickets are still available) he stopped by the Loft to chat about his solo career.
"Your first single "Give It Up," I love it! You've got a really blues and rnb sound. Where did that come from?" Maureen Umeh.
Nathan tells Umeh he grew up listening to music legends that influenced his current sound, to name a few: Motown, Stevie Wonder, Danny Hathaway, Ray Charles, and Frank Sinatra.
In his upcoming album, fans can expect to hear a variation of genres, like rnb and jazz, but it's essentially pop.
He worked closely with Harmony Samuels, Babyface, and Diane Warren on "Unfinished Business."
Nathan stated, one song in particular with Babyface, "has got to be the most heartbreaking songs I have ever written, in my entire life! But I wouldn't have think to have written it with an idol of mine."
If you're wondering where the name of the album came from it was from the moment the band "The Wanted" took a break.
As the youngest member of the former band, Nathan states he knew he had more to give, more potential, more to fulfill, and more to discover as an artist himself. He was far from ready to quit what he loved. In other words, he had unfinished business.
His passion for music is so profound he regularly visits music students and schools to provide advice for those pursing the dream.
"I always say never let anyone or anything get in the way of doing what you love," Nathan Sykes.
After the interview was over, the morning crew couldn't let him leave without taking a few selfies-- after all, it is Nathan Sykes!
