February 1st is the start of Black History Month and in a unique way of celebrating, Instagram has launched the #MakeYourMap initiative.
Instagramers are encouraged to tell stories of their own heritage using the power of photography and social media.
The company has created a map of D.C. cultural landmarks that capture aspects of local African American heritage. The map was created using photos by some of D.C.'s most influential Instagramers!
Instagram is such a great a powerful medium for story telling visually and it seemed like a natural fit to help tell the story of the cultural history of the city around Black History Month, said Crystal Patterson, an outreach manager with Instagram. "And D.C. is so rich with so much cultural history in the African-American community."
Patterson said anyone can post a picture of a landmark that they think represents the cultural history of the city using the #MakeYourMap hashtag.
Aniekan Udofia, whose work is featured in #MakeYourMap, says the experience was powerful and represents the past and present.
