WASHINGTON - The 1976 documentary, Grey Gardens, followed the lives of two eccentric relatives of Jackie Kennedy Onassis and their lives at their Long Island estate.
Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale ("Big Edie") and her daughter Edith (“Little Edie”) lived in squalor as virtual shut-ins at the once-beautiful home.
The documentary became a cult-classic and was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry. It was also adapted into a musical and an HBO original movie.
After the death of “Big Edie,” her daughter sold the estate to a couple who completely restored it to its former glory. Now, it’s up for sale again, and FOX 5 contributor Paul Wharton was one of the last house guests to get to experience the estate.
