Chewbacca is back! The legendary Wookiee character made famous by the Stars Wars adventures gets a featured role in the new film, Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Played by 6-foot-10-inch Joonas Suotamo, the new movie fills in the backstory of how Chewie and Han Solo first meet.
Suotamo, a Finnish actor and a former professional basketball player, said he studied film at Penn State and got a phone call – out of the blue – from the Finnish Basketball Association about the role.
The real-life Chewbacca told FOX 5 that even though most of the sounds his character makes are added later in post-production, he still made them on set to stay in character and to give reference points during editing. He said he was given lines, that he translated into Wookiee-English, so that he and the other characters could better react during the scenes.
Suotamo said it took over an hour to get into costume and that he took every advantage to cool off when he could. He said he had great experiences working with both Han Solos - Alden Ehrenreich and Harrison Ford
FOX 5's Kevin McCarthy couldn’t resist his final question – is there a dented scene in the film of Chewbacca playing basketball? "I hope so!" said Suotamo.
