FOX Beat: 'Big Stone Gap' star Whoopi Goldberg

FOX 5’s Kevin McCarthy was in the right place at the right time when he stepped in to interview screen star Whoopi Goldberg. The unexpected interview happened when he showed up to interview Ashley Judd and Patrick Wilson, stars of the new film, 'Big Stone Gap.' In the next room sat Goldberg, another star of the film – and when he was given the opportunity to sit with her and ask a few questions he didn’t hesitate.

She said her newest character, Fleeta Mullins, was fully born when she took on the role. The film’s writer and director, Adriana Trigiani, was very descriptive with her role so that very little had to be interpreted.

Her role as Celie in the 'Color Purple,' however, was one that took more time to develop. Goldberg said that she uses everything she learned from director Steven Spielberg on the set of that 1985 film – including listening to an audience that you can’t see or hear.

"The audience is there," he told her when she asked about the length of production. "They're just mute. And when you look at the person you're talking to, you'll hear if they're appreciating what you're doing or not."

Only one character stayed with Goldberg after the filming of the movie was complete. Alice Adrose, her character from the Tyler Perry film, 'For Colored Girls,' was with Goldberg for months after shooting stopped. She said the character not no redeeming qualities and that she couldn’t get rid of her. "It was a little scary," she said, "because she was really kind-of maniacal!"
