FOX 5 DC Cares: Miss DC United States, Porcha Taylor, works to spread Alzheimer's awareness

- Porcha Taylor's reason for getting involved with the Alzheimer's Association is close to her heart. She lost her grandmother, Minnie, to Alzheimer's and works to raise awareness through a new group called, YoungNationALZ.

With the group, she and other young professionals raise awareness about the disease through volunteering.

"My grandmother was an amazing woman," Taylor, 26, told us. "She was so much strength - and just embodied so much of her family which was so important to us. And I miss her."

She said her grandmother’s diagnosis devastated her family. Knowing not much time was left, Porcha began visiting with her every chance she could. "I wanted to be able to give that same value and support back to her regardless of what her state of mind was in. Regardless of the fact that she couldn't remember who I was," she said.

Taylor, who was recently crowned Miss D.C., hopes to use her platform to spread her message. "I am only one voice. But if we get together, we can do so much more."

FOX 5 DC cares is partnering with the Alzheimer's Association as it gets ready for its big fundraising event called, "The Longest Day."

"The Longest Day" is Monday, June 20th – here is how you can get involved:
