FOX 5 CARES: Dancing helps group honor Elaine Krawitz, spread Alzheimer's awareness

- Step And Swing For Elaine helps the Alzheimer's Association by organizing a dance group to help spread awareness of the disease.

The group was started in honor of Elaine Krawitz, a passionate dancer who died from Alzheimer's last year.

"You know at the start, dementia is really hard to discern. It's little things that only you would know if you have been with somebody for a long time and you really know them," said her husband Gil. He said that he and Elaine were high school sweethearts who grew up together and enjoyed life. "I loved taking care of her – I really did," Gil said of his wife.

"She still wanted to dance," said her good friend Ellen of Elaine. "She still had a glow about her, especially on that dance floor," she said. "I remember her as a dancer with a great sense of musicality and a fun, quirky sense of humor that never left her," added Ellen’s husband Steve.

A woman with courage, passion and love of dance – those are what Elaine is remembered for.

The New England Journal of Medicine published a study several years ago called: "Dancing Makes You Smarter". It shows that frequent dancing is the only physical activity that offers protection against dementia.

The "Longest Day Fundraiser For Elaine: Step And Swing For Elaine" takes place on July 9th, so there is still time to get involved!

Check out their Facebook page and get out to great Falls Virginia to dance, or donate!
