WASHINGTON - Do you have unused vacation days piling up? According to the Global Forecasting Group Oxford Economics, 400 million vacation days will go unused by American workers this year.
Gregory Jones with Capitol Center for Psychotherapy and Wellness talked with us about how not taking vacations may actually be doing some damage on your health.
Jones says many people don't take vacation days because they stress about what they may miss at work. Other times, people are afraid to spend that money and feel obligated to save it.
Here are some benefits of taking a vacation and ways to enjoy a low-stress vacation:
Benefits of vacation
- Reduces stress levels. By stressing out too much, your immune system becomes compromised and you're more likely to become sick. You're even more likely to develop heart disease and possibly even a stroke.
- Reduces negativity.
- Gives a boost to "happiness quotient".
Low-stress vacation planning
- Plan in advance.
- Go somewhere new. Whether it's just going to a new town or somewhere you're unfamiliar with because a new environment can really activate the senses.
- Check work emails, if you must. Don't obsess, but it is okay to make sure you're not missing anything and the world is surviving without you. But then put it away and RELAX!
