WASHINGTON - A local woman whose charity holds birthday parties for area homeless children is in the national spotlight after winning a major award.
Schinnell Leake, founder of Extra-Ordinary Birthdays, has been recognized with a 2015 L'Oréal Paris Women of Worth award. The award is given to extraordinary women who work to make a difference in their communities – and Schinnell is all that and more.
"Every child should experience that sense of -- I am so glad you were born!" -- Schinnell Leake
Schinnell founded Extra-Ordinary Birthdays over ten years ago after learning of the overwhelming number of homeless children in the D.C. area. Knowing how important having confidence and self-worth is to her own children, she set out to make sure birthday parties were held for as many youngsters as she could.
Schinnell has thrown over 400 birthday parties since starting her charity – and her work has inspired other to help the cause. After hearing her story, our own Holly Morris will be sponsoring a birthday party for a homeless child the same age as her own child.
In addition to being named a Women of Worth, Schinnell was recognized by entertainer Jennifer Lopez on Woman Crush Wednesday.
