David Duchovny talks new 'X-Files'; reveals words to show's theme song

David Duchovny sat down with FOX 5’s Allison Seymour to talk about his music and about his career and the return of 'The X-Files.'

In the early 90s, David Duchovny took on his most famous role as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder.

Nowadays, the 55-year-old has just finished up recording his debut rock album and is gearing up for FOX’s January limited re-launch of 'The X-Files.'

Duchovny sat down with FOX 5’s Allison Seymour to talk about his music and about his career.

He said he took up the guitar about 5-year-ago after always having an interest in music. He calls his album, 'Hell or Highwater,' emotional and says it focuses on loss and moving on after making mistakes. "I guess these lyrics reflect who I am now." he said. "I didn't get to have the young lyrics because I didn't start until late."

Working on new episodes of 'The X-Files,' which went off the air over a decade ago, was challenging, he said. "There was a tough balancing act to do – satisfying the diehard fans that are the reason we are able to continue to do it…but also you don’t just want to repeat, you don’t want to just make a show where you’re tossing off lines that everybody loves, and people applaud because they’re hearing something familiar."

"We’ve got a smart reinvention of our mythology stories, plus, we’ve got some stand-alone, scary, monster-of-the-week, type episodes, and I think it’s a nice balance."

He hopes the revival will bring in new fans. "I don’t think you have to know anything out the show to enjoy it – it might help a little. On the other hand – I don’t think people who love the show already are going to be bored by any kind of recounting of what’s already gone on."

He wouldn’t let on if his character and Gillian Anderson’s character, Dana Scully, are romantically involved in the new show but he did tell Allison there were actually words to the famous theme song.

"The X-Files is a show," he sang. "With music by Mark Snow." "That’s it."

As far as his new music goes, Duchovny doesn’t think Fox Mulder would be a fan. "I think Mulder listens to the sounds of the Yeti. I don’t know what he listens too. He never had a hobby. He’s a pretty one-dimensional guy."
