2015 Hero Dog helps vets returning from combat

- The 2015 Hero Dog Awards will air on the Hallmark channel this October 30th. It’s a celebration of the four-legged friends who protect and save lives every day.

Axel, the winner of the service dog award joined us with his owner, retired U.S. Marine Corp Captain Jason Haag.

After returning from several combat tours in the Middle East, Haag was diagnosed with PTSD and traumatic brain injury.

Cpt. Haag said he wasn’t a dog person when he first met Axel but he went in with an open mind. He said they built a relationship over about four months and then it clicked and he knew it was going to work.

"It saved my life," he said about his relationship with Axel. "I mean I was basically knocking at death's door, and I was at my wits end. My family was falling apart and without Axle I wouldn't be standing here talking to you."
